my friends said to just ask her since most girls will say yes to

Would this be a case of "Environmental Harrassment"? It sounds like the times you see this girl, and would thus have an opportunity to ask her out, are during class. Since this is a learning environment, and not a social environment (like a singles dance, etc.), it could be considered environmental harrassment since you might put her in an awkward, unrelated situation (e.g. asking her out on a date) to what the current environment's purpose is for (e.g. learning).
